I love doing arts and crafts with my four year old. We end up with so many projects that I don’t know what to do with them when we’re done. Some get saved. Many get tossed. I like to share some of the cool things we do with our friends and family. So this holiday season we decided to make our own DIY holiday cards to give out. These ideas are really easy to do with preschoolers and they look great even when your child “helps”. The great thing is you don’t have to do it perfectly for it to look good. For these cards Lulu helped me cut out the triangle and circle shapes but if your child is younger or gets frustrated with cutting (or just doesn’t feel like it) you can cut all the shapes out ahead of time.
What you need:
- card-stock paper, folded in half
- green, yellow, white, brown construction paper
- mini colour coding stickers
- glue
- scissors
- pencils/crayons/markers
- Googly eyes (optional)
- stamps and stamping pads (optional)
DIY Christmas Tree Card:
Cut out green triangles of different shapes and sizes. They do not have to be perfect. Trees are not perfectly shaped after all! You need about 3-4 triangles per card. Cut out yellow stars to top the trees. Cut out brown rectangles for tree trunks.
Assemble your tree and once you’re happy with it, glue the triangles down. Glue the star on top of the tree.
Pro Tip: Encourage your child to put glue on the tree pieces rather than the card.
Use the colour coding stickers to “decorate” your tree. This was by far Lulu’s favourite part of making the cards.
Once your tree is done, draw some “presents” under the tree (you can also use stickers or cut out square and rectangle shapes for this).
Write your message on the card and Voila!
I also used snowflake and xmas tree stamps to decorate the front of the cards (I have these left over from my scrapbooking days).
DIY Snowman Card:
Cut out different sized circles on the white construction paper. I traced various measuring cups for these and then Lulu and I cut them out.
Assemble your snowman and once you’re happy with it, glue it down.
Decorate your snowman: As you can see, Lulu’s version was a lot more colourful than mine. We decided to give our snowmen silly googly eyes but you can just draw the eyes with a sharpie or a pencil. Draw a carrot nose, stick arms, a hat if you’d like (you can also cut the hats out of black construction paper). Use the colour coding stickers for the buttons.
I used the tree and snowflakes stamps for the background, but again you can just draw those in (or leave it blank).
Write your message on the card and Voila!
We really enjoyed making these and they turned out great. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
Do you make your own cards with your kiddos? I’d love to hear some ideas for next year.
And don’t forget to read all about our fun Chrismukkah holiday traditions!

These cards look absolutely beautiful. The Art teacher at my school had the students make holiday cards and I must admit, that some of them were stunning and ones I would have sent out over Hallmark. Thanks for sharing. This is a great idea.

My favorite thing to do with my girls is crafting! The end products are so worth all the mess I have to clean up. LOL We will be adding this to our Christmas project lineup this year. Thanks!
